This hike is only open to people who have previously hiked with Atlanta Hikes.
Jack’s River Trail follows the Jack’s River in the Cohutta Wilderness. This will be a two night backpacking hike. This is a great hike where you will experience things you possibly have not experienced before. It is a wilderness area so there are no restroom facilities.
As we are mostly following the river there are not a lot of incline changes. However we will be crossing the river about 50 times during the hike. You will need to wear appropriate footwear. I highly recommend wearing river shoes such as these. Keen River Shoes. You don’t have to get this brand but look for something that will protect your toes. You can use a pair a light tennis shoes but you are likely to get blisters as they will be continuously wet. You will not have time to change your shoes every time we cross the river so plan on hiking with wet feet. I would also recommend a hiking pole or stick as it is sometimes tricky to keep your balance when crossing the river. The depth of the river will be from ankle deep to possibly waist deep. When the river is waist deep it doesn’t flow as fast so don’t panic too much. However the river bed is slippery so tread carefully. If you do bring a hiking pole bear in mind it might not be good for use after this trip as water sometimes damages it’s ability to extend.
Other items needed which you may be able to borrow or rent.
– Tent (could be shared)
– Sleeping bag (probably won’t be shared 😉
Do not worry if you don’t have these items. We will make sure everyone is properly equipped before we start this hike. I will provide a checklist which will be sent to people who sign up.
Please sign up early and definitely by 5/12/14 if you wish to go on this hike. Signing up early encourages others to go on the hike and means there is less likelihood of me cancelling it due to apparent lack of interest.
